MMA EXPLAINED: STRIKING, WRESTLING & GROUND FIGHTING

What Is MMA?
Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, combines techniques from several combat sports into one complete system.
Rather than focusing only on striking or grappling, MMA teaches you how to fight at different ranges — standing, in the clinch, during takedowns and on the ground.
That variety is what makes MMA such a complete and demanding martial art.
Striking
Striking covers the stand-up side of MMA.
Training can include punches, kicks, knees, elbows, footwork, combinations and defence. You’ll learn how to control distance, move effectively and attack while protecting yourself.
Disciplines such as boxing, Muay Thai and kickboxing all contribute to the striking skills used in MMA.
Wrestling & Takedowns
Wrestling connects the standing and ground elements of MMA.
You learn how to control an opponent in the clinch, defend takedowns and bring the fight to the ground when the opportunity is there.
It also teaches balance, pressure, positioning and control — skills that become increasingly important as your MMA develops.
Ground Fighting
Once the fight reaches the ground, grappling becomes essential.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other grappling disciplines teach positional control, escapes, transitions and submissions.
In MMA, these techniques are adapted to account for strikes and the different situations that can occur during a fight.
How It All Comes Together
The real challenge of MMA isn't simply learning each discipline individually. It's learning how to transition between them.
A striking exchange can become a takedown. A takedown can lead to ground control. A scramble can bring both fighters back to their feet.
MMA training teaches you to understand and connect all of these situations.
Do You Need Experience to Start MMA?
No.
You don't need to already know boxing, wrestling or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before starting MMA.
At B4MMA, beginners can develop the fundamentals progressively while more experienced athletes continue refining their technique and combining different areas of their game.
You also don't need to have ambitions of competing. MMA can be trained for fitness, confidence, skill development and simply because you enjoy learning martial arts.
