BOXING FOR BEGINNERS: WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN YOUR FIRST CLASSES

Starting Boxing
You don’t need any previous experience to start boxing.
Your first classes are about building the fundamentals: learning how to move, punch correctly, defend yourself and gradually become more comfortable with the different elements of training.
You’re not expected to walk through the door already knowing what you’re doing.
Stance & Footwork
Before throwing combinations, you need a solid base.
Your boxing stance affects your balance, movement, defence and ability to generate power. You’ll learn how to position your feet, distribute your weight and move efficiently without losing your stance.
Good footwork becomes the foundation for everything that follows.
Learning the Basic Punches
You’ll gradually develop the fundamental punches used in boxing, including the jab, cross, hooks and uppercuts.
The focus isn't simply on hitting hard.
Good boxing requires technique, timing, accuracy and an understanding of how your whole body works together to generate effective punches.
Combinations
Once the fundamentals begin to feel natural, individual punches can be connected into combinations.
You’ll learn how different attacks flow together while maintaining your balance and positioning.
As you progress, combinations can become more complex and start incorporating movement, defence and counter-attacks.
Defence & Movement
Learning how not to get hit is just as important as learning how to punch.
Boxing training introduces defensive skills such as blocking, slipping, movement and controlling distance.
Over time, you'll begin to understand when to attack, when to defend and how to move between the two.
Fitness & Conditioning
Boxing is also physically demanding.
Training develops cardiovascular fitness, coordination, speed, endurance and overall conditioning.
But you don't need to be fit before you start. Your fitness develops progressively through training.
Do I Have to Spar?
Starting boxing doesn't mean you're immediately going to be put into a fight.
Technique and control come first.
Training can involve pad work, bag work, drills, partner exercises and conditioning before progressing into more advanced training.
Your development should happen at an appropriate pace for your experience and ability.
